Open plus

The University of Bristol and the Open University have formed a partnership to create a flexible way for you to obtain a Chemistry degree, through OpenPlus.

This route is ideal if you cannot attend the University campus on a regular basis during your first two years, or wish to combine work with study before going full time.

You will study in your own time on a supported open learning course with the Open University, to get a thorough grounding in Chemistry. You will study at home using printed or online learning resources sent to you by the OU, and have support from your OU tutor and other OU staff. You will also have a member of University of Bristol staff as a tutor contact.

You will take part in two residential schools at the OU to learn practical laboratory skills and you'll also be invited to attend the LabSkills course at Bristol as part of your second year course; this will give you an opportunity to visit Bristol, the city and university, work in the laboratories in the School of Chemistry.  You will also be able to meet staff and students, with whom you will work with during your third and fourth years of study.

Entry requirements

An interest and enthusiasm for Chemistry, and a willingness to learn are all that are needed to get started, as there are no formal entry requirements for Open University degrees but you will be required to write a personal statement explaining why you want to study chemistry and why the OpenPlus route is most suitable for you. You may also be called for interview.

Entry to the University of Bristol BSc Chemistry degree programme is subject to you passing all of the first and second year modules listed above.

For the first 2 years, students pay OU fees, however there are often a number of ways to get financial assistance.

University of Bristol fees will apply for your study at Bristol. You may well be eligible for financial support during your time at Bristol.
