Why choose Bristol?
As a Chemistry student at Bristol, you will benefit from an exceptional standard of teaching in a department with an international reputation for research.
Our strength in research was confirmed by the results of the last Research Excellence Framework (REF) assessment, a national audit of universities’ research output, which placed Bristol among the top four chemistry departments in the UK. As a result, some of the world’s top chemists are attracted to work and teach at Bristol.
As an undergraduate student, you will have access to a high calibre of research facilities and infrastructure throughout your degree programme, and particularly during your final-year research project.
We are a large chemistry department, admitting about 200 undergraduate students to our Chemistry and Chemical Physics degree programmes every year. Most of these students come from the UK, but a number also come from further afield.
We also have a large postgraduate population, with around 150 students actively engaged in research alongside about 50-70 others who are writing up their PhD theses.
All our students are supported by more than 50 members of academic staff, with interests and expertise that cover the full spectrum of chemistry, from fundamental theory to applications.
The result is a vibrant and dynamic department and an exciting and enjoyable place to study and work.
Undergraduate Teaching Labs is the only Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning devoted to chemistry. Bristol ChemLabS has revolutionised the way our students study practical chemistry. We have transformed our teaching laboratories into world-class facilities that are equipped with the latest equipment and instrumentation.
Dynamic Lab Manual
Our innovative online Dynamic Laboratory Manual (DLM) will help you prepare thoroughly before you come into the laboratory. The DLM has transformed teaching and student learning in a laboratory environment.
