Bristol Chemistry ranks 4th in the UK for Research Excellence

The School of Chemistry’s status as one of the very best Chemistry Departments in the UK for research is confirmed by the results from the Research Excellence Framework (REF) released at the end of December 2014. In terms of the overall Grade Point Average (GPA) based on the assessed categories of Outputs, Impact and Environment, Bristol Chemistry ranks 4th out of 37 chemistry departments in the UK. Research Power (which combines GPA with the number of eligible staff submitted) also places Bristol Chemistry 4th.

Professor Nick Norman, Head of the School of Chemistry, said: “This result confirms that the School of Chemistry at Bristol ranks as one of the very best in the UK for research and I am delighted with this outcome. It is a testament to the very high quality of the work carried out by all of our staff; overall 96% of all research activity was judged to be either 4* (world-leading) or 3* (internationally excellent).
