School of Chemistry installs new LGBT+ Flagpole

20 November 2018

We are proud to announce that our new LGBT+ flagpole has been installed in the East Foyer, outside Lecture Theatre One.

A variety of flags will be flown on a rotating basis to demonstrate our commitment to building an inclusive and welcoming environment for all staff, students, and visitors within the School.

Members of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee joined with Head of School Emma Raven and many other staff and students on Tuesday 13th November to officially install the new flagpole and raise the rainbow flag. Emma and Amelia spoke of the importance of visible support for LGBT+ people and how encouraging it is for those people to feel welcome and celebrated as a valued part of the University. Furthermore, Amelia highlighted how this visible support can be particularly powerful for people who are questioning their sexuality and gender identity and those who may be considering whether or not to come out.

The flags will be changed on a regular basis to represent different groups within the LGBT+ community.

The University also has its own LGBT+ Network for staff, and for students, there is an LGBT+ Network, LGBT+ Society, and Trans Student’s Network within the SU.
