An understanding of the processes involving the movement of both natural and anthropogenic compounds through the various phases comprising the biosphere rest upon the ability to monitor such movement. The process of monitoring implies the ability to measure such compounds at a regular number of time intervals.
In this group we are developing ways to determine the very low levels of such compounds as they move through the environment. The techniques of chromatography, atomic spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy have revolutionised our understanding of these movements over the last two decades.

Dr. G. Nickless was a Reader in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Bristol where he has led an active analytical group for the past thirty years. He is now retired but still holds the position of Senior Research Fellow. During the last ten years, he has closely collaborated with Dr.
Simmonds and Dr. O'Doherty, being equally concerned with the measurement of many of the important atmospheric trace gases, especially those attributed to cause ozone depletion and radiative forcing. He is responsible for the day-to-day financial management of the groups projects.
He has recently been awarded the Jubilee Silver ...
