Research summary

Pierangelo’s research aims to open new frontiers in the field of synthetic biology by pioneering new technological advancements towards the spatio-temporal organisation of protocells into interconnected networks that are capable of emulating living tissues and displaying emergent synergistic behaviours.

To achieve this goal he will work at the interface of physical-organic chemistry, biomaterials chemistry, and synthetic biology to develop 1) new adhesive synthetic protocell membranes; 2) unprecedented technologies for the assembly of prototissues with high spatio-temporal resolution; and 3) innovative forms of chemo-mechanical transduction within prototissues.

Overall, this research aims to address important emerging challenges in bottom-up synthetic biology and bioinspired ...

Pierangelo was born and raised in Cittadella, Italy. He received his BSc (2008) and MSc (2010) in chemistry at the nearby University of Padua (Università degli Studi di Padova). During his MSc he worked under the supervision of Professor Flavio Maran on electron transfer investigations through self-assembled monolayers of conformationally constrained peptides. He received his PhD in 2016 under the supervision of Professor Mark S. Workentin at the University of Western Ontario (Canada), where he focused on the development, synthesis, and characterization of clickable and biorthogonal nanomaterials. He then joined the research group of Professor Stephen Mann, FRS at the ...
