Catherine McIntyre

Postgraduate Student

I began an Environmental Science degree at NUI Galway in 2010 and, after a slight forking of my career path, graduated as a Chemist with 1st class honours in 2014. During my undergrad, I completed internships in environmental microbiology and electrochemistry. I always retained my interest in environmental science, despite specialising in chemistry. My final year project was in protein chemistry, using NMR to study the effect of chemical modification on protein-small molecule interactions. Prior to my return to university, I worked as an animator for television series and advertisements.

I am a postgraduate researcher on the DOMAINE project. The aim of the overall project is to characterise dissolved organic matter in river catchments and to identify sources and transport/transformation processes. My project looks more specifically at dissolved organic phosphorus in these systems and aims to characterise these compounds in detail. The project is led by Prof Penny Johnes (Geography), and I am working in the OGU, supervised by Prof Richard Evershed.
