Research Interests

Welcome to Orthopaedic Research within the Musculoskeletal Research Unit.

Orthopaedic Research in our unit is led by Professor Ashley Blom.

Within Orthopaedic Research, our work focuses on two main areas:

1) Health Services Research (including clinical trials), led by Rachael Gooberman-Hill 2) Laboratory based work, led by Patrick Case

Within Health Services Research our focus is on improving outcome for people having joint replacements and for people living with osteoarthritis. To do this we conduct cohort studies, clinical trials, systematic reviews and qualitative projects. Our Laboratory based work includes research into molecular cytogenetic and immunological responses of human cells to orthopaedic materials.

In addition, we undertake statistical analysis of the National Joint Registry, the largest arthroplasty register in the world. This includes survivorship analysis for the NJR Annual Report and the development of the outlier methodology to monitor the performance of orthopaedic implants, units and surgeons.

This work is contracted by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP) and is led by Professor Ashley Blom. The most recent NJR Annual Report can be downloaded here.
