Fiona's main interests are in methodological research motivated by social science problems, particularly in the field of demography. She is currently leading two ESRC-funded research projects: LEMMA (2) (i.e: Learning Environment for Multilevel Methodology and Applications), and The interrelationships between housing transitions and fertility in Britain and Australia. She is also joint leader of the Methods Strand of the ESRC large grant An examination of the impact of family socioeconomic status on child and adolescent outcomes (led by Professor Paul Gregg from the Centre for Market and Public Organisation at Bristol).
As part of the LEMMA project, Fiona has coordinated the development of our online training system for multilevel modelling. The system contains a set of graduated modules, starting from an introduction to quantitative research and progressing to multilevel modelling of continuous data.
Fiona is a member of the ESRC Methods and Infrastructure Committee, which has responsibility for developing resources such as data, research methods, and information technology for UK social research. She is also an Associate Editor of Sociological Methodology and a member of the editorial board for Longitudinal and Lifecourse Studies.In 2008, Fiona was awarded the Guy Medal in Bronze by the Royal Statistical Society. She was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 2009, and awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2010.
