We have been heartened by the huge amount of support we have received from people across the world in regard to the University plans in relation to the BSc in Deaf Studies. Decisions have now been made within Senate and Council which accept the closure of the BSc in Deaf Studies but with safeguards and not until 2013. The Centre Director is in discussion with the University in relation to staff to ensure their continuation and their contribution to the teaching programme. We will update you on these discussions as the details become available. There will be a new group of students in 2010.The official wording is below:
Extract from the official statement from the University of Bristol Faculty of Social Science and law sent to students:
“Centre for Deaf Studies
The recommendations entail the continuation of the Centre for Deaf Studies within the Faculty, including the continuation of its MSc programme, research student programme and research activities. However, the recommendations also include the withdrawal of the BSc in Deaf Studies. If the degree is withdrawn, current students and those offered a place from October 2010 will be able to complete their studies. The programme, which has recruited 15 students a year, will continue to be taught until June 2013 and there should be no significant impact on the students concerned. There is no proposal to close the Centre for Deaf Studies.”
We will continue to discuss the possibilities to provide a high quality set of course at all levels which will be appropriate to the University and the community at large, in line with the University’s clearly stated vision.
