Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Bristol Dental School is committed to providing a positive working environment.

The School is contributing to the national goal of ensuring equality of opportunity for all, through:

  • developing good employment practices;
  • tackling the unequal representation in research, teaching and clinical posts;
  • removing barriers for career progression.

We are part of the Dental Schools Council which has formed a working group with the Medical Schools Council focussing upon positive working environments within Dental Schools.

As Head of School, one of my key roles is to promote and support the provision of equal opportunities for all students and staff of Bristol Dental School. In line with Athena SWAN principles, we aim to provide a fair working environment in which everyone has the opportunity to fulfil their potential.

Athena SWAN Awards

Athena SWAN awards recognise the advancement of gender equality, representation, progression, and success for all.

They recognise the efforts of organisations to ensure a positive working environment: that diversity is represented and valued at all levels: and that there is equality of opportunity for promotion and progression for all staff.

Promoting equality of opportunity is an integral part of the school's culture here at Bristol. With a flexible working ethos and open communication with management at all levels, the school supports staff as they progress through their careers, from their time as students through to foundation dentists and right up to becoming professor for those who choose academic careers.

Dr Andrea Waylen, Senior Lecturer in Psychology
