Research summary

The Kuanchuanpu Formation is situated at the base of the Cambrian, providing insight into the earliest animal life. It helps to fill in the gap between the enigmatic Ediacaran fauna and the later Cambrian life, as exemplified by the Chengjiang and Burgess Shale lagerstatten. The fossils are primarily microscopic embryos, larvae and hatchlings that have for many years been the subject of extensive debate - what are they, and how are they related to each other and to extant life? My research is investigating the affinities and phylogenetic relationships of these organisms.
