Dr William Wimbledon

Interests:

The palaeobiology and stratigraphy of the Jurassic to early Cretaceous.  In particular, research is focused on biostratigraphy and palaeoenvironments, and attempting to constrain the position of the J-K boundary using multi-disciplinary methods: also on the stratigraphic puzzle of correlating marine and non-marine J-K strata. Palaeontological interests include Kimmeridgian to Valanginian ammonite faunas: boreal taxa in the UK and France, Greenland, Russia and Tethyan in Crimea, France and Kurdistan

I have always been involved in geoheritage and worked both at home and abroad on this topic.

Research focus:

Calibration of magnetic & biotic markers in the Tithonian & Berriasian and at the J/K boundary.  Integrated studies of J/K interval biotas.
Proxies for Calpionella alpina, the primary J/K boundary marker.  High-resolution Berriasian stratigraphy of southern Ukraine and SE France (Drôme/Haute Alpes and Ardèche).

Tithonian-Berriasian boreal ammonites of Greenland, France, United Kingdom etc. The Portland & Purbeck formations of England and France. Non-marine Purbeck facies - Kimmeridgian to Valanginian non-marine: marine correlations.

Contributing to the work of the Berriasian Working Group of ICS's Cretaceous Subcommission.

Fieldwork areas have included: Ukraine, France, Iraq, Tunisia, UK, Italy, California, Russian Far East, Volga......
