Martin Hughes presents a seminar using drama to explore teenagers' out-of-school learning

Organised by Centre for Narratives and Transformative Learning (CeNTraL)

Speaker: Prof. Martin Hughes - Graduate School of Education

Room 113, 35 Berkeley Square, BS8 1JA.

This seminar will focus on some exploratory research I have recently been carrying out in a secondary school in Bristol. The research is part of my ESRC professorial fellowship on learning out-of-school, in which I have been obtaining children and young peoples’ accounts of their out-of-school learning in a wide range of contexts. The seminar will describe work I have been carrying out with a Bristol-based theatre company – Kokopelli Theatre – in which we have supported a group of 13/14 year-olds as they developed dramatic performances which represented important events in their out-of-school lives – often ones charged with considerable emotion – and then described what they learned from this experience. In the seminar I am hoping to obtain feedback and insights into how we might conceptualise this kind of work and what it tells us about young people’s learning.
