As a psychologist, Trang's research expertise is in HE student experience and wellbeing, specifically their developmental process and psychological wellbeing. She is particularly interested in the psychological development during intercultural experiences, and their influence on wellbeing. Her PhD research focused on wellbeing and personal development of doctoral students.

Previously, Trang has worked on research projects studying other aspects of HE student experience, e.g. Extenuating circumstances procedures; BME students' experience; NSS scores; Students' use of academic feedback. Her MEd research project looked at ESL students' experience of studying in the UK, and her MSc thesis explored the impacts that cultural differences have on psychoanalytic treatment.


PhD research: Learning to thrive: A longitudinal mixed methods study of intercultural doctoral students (IDSs)

Utilising a longitudinal mixed methods approach, the study explored IDSs’ experience through the lens of developmental ecology, focusing on the developmental process during which they undergo adjustments in their socio-cultural adaptation (SCA) and their psychological wellbeing (PWB). Quantitative data analyses included Linear Mixed Effects Models, Linear Regressions, and Correlations; Qualitative analyses included Hybrid Thematic Analysis and Structural Narrative Analysis. Three theories were used to conceptualise IDSs’ development over time: (1) SCA theory (Searle & Ward, 1990; Ward & Kennedy, 1999), (2) PWB model (Ryff, 1989; Ryff & Keyes, 1995), and (3) Ecological Systems Theory (EST) (Bronfenbrenner, 1979, 1989, 2005).
