The Centre for Research on Language and Education is the intellectual home for staff and post-graduate students of language education and Applied Linguistics in the Graduate School of Education. This means:
investigating theory and practice issues in areas such as language learning and teaching, testing and assessment, language programme evaluation, intercultural awareness and pragmatics;
developing innovative methodologies for research across a diverse range of multicultural and multilingual contexts;
securing research grants from a range of sources;
disseminating the results of our research in Applied Linguistics journals and other publications; and
supporting learning about research among all our students as a means of achieving enhanced understanding of language issues in society and improved practices in all aspects of language education.
Current research in the centre focuses in particular on these topic areas:
testing and assessment, including conceptually and methodologically innovative research on assessment by teachers and effects of new technologies;
language programme evaluation, including research on curriculum development and quality assurance in English for Academic Purpose;
teacher education and learning; and
language and identity in multilingual contexts.
