Research vision

Our vision

Our vision is to achieve excellence in the study of learning through innovative, inter-disciplinary research conducted locally and globally, in formal and informal contexts and across the life span. Our research investigates learning in order to contribute positively to processes of personal, professional, organisational and social transformation. Our research informs high quality teaching, public partnership, enterprise and practitioner engagement.

Our values

We are committed to the study of learning. This is fundamental to what we do and distinguishes our focus from that of other disciplines.

Our strengths as a School lie in our creativity. We achieve excellence in the study of learning. through theoretical and methodological innovation.

Learning is fundamentally about transformation whether it is about transforming the life chances of individuals, professional and organisational practices or to contribute to processes of social transformation.

Our organisational structure

Our work is structured around three inter-related Thematic Groups which provide enduring academic support for all students and staff. Centres are validated foci of excellence researching specific issues. Networks support new academic alliances and embryonic areas of inquiry. Each uses a range of cross-cutting innovative methodologies from consolidating quantitative research to the development of advanced statistical tools; from interdisciplinarity to mixed methodologies; from qualitative inquiry to performance-based and visual analysis.
