Professor David Bull leads the Signal Processing activities within the Centre for Communications Research of which he is Deputy Director. He is a member of the UK Foresight Panel, the EPSRC Communications College and the Steering Group for the DTI/EPSRC LINK programme in Broadcast Technology. He is a past director of the VCE in Digital Broadcasting and Multimedia Technology and is currently a director of a University spin-out company, ProVision Communication Technologies Ltd, which specialises in wireless multimedia communications. He is currently involved in establishing a new DTI funded (£7.62M) Centre for Communications Computing and Content which will be based at Bristol
David Bull has worked widely in the fields of 1- and 2-D signal processing and has published over 250 papers, articles and books. His current research is focused on the problems of image and video communications for both low bit rate wireless, internet and broadcast applications. In particular he is working on error resilient source coding, linear and non-linear filterbanks, scalable coding methods, motion estimation and architectural optimisation (for filters, transforms and wavelet filterbanks), content description for video archiving and image authentication using digital watermarks. He is widely supported in these areas by EPSRC and industrial partners in the UK and Europe.
