Introduction

An MSc or PhD by research is an extremely challenging and rewarding method of study for a higher degree. The student is expected to produce a significant contribution to the development and understanding of a specific field within Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Communications or Energy Management, and this affords an exciting opportunity to engage in leading-edge research in an internationally recognised university.

Eligibility

Applicants should hold the equivalent of a 1st or 2.1 (Hons) degree. Occasionally candidates with a different class of degree may be admitted if they can demonstrate their potential for higher degree work, e.g. by holding other qualifications, presenting published work or if they have relevant work experience. Applicants who's previous degree was not taught in English will also be required to demonstrate competence to study in English, e.g. via an IELTS test certificate.

Period of Study

MSc by Research: either 1 or 2 years of full-time study.

PhD: 2 or 3 years of full-time study.

Most postgraduate research students undertake PhD research and generally take three years to complete their study.

Extended Study

Research Assistants can register for MSc or PhD degrees under the Extended Study rules whereby they undertake their own study in addition to the Department's work. Industrially-based students may also pursue a research degree under the Extended Study rules, however they do require financial and research support from their company.

Applications

Online application is strongly encouraged. Before completing an application, you should read the relevant material to ensure that the research interests of the Department match your interests. During the application process you will have the opportunity to indicate a preferred research group or member(s) of academic staff.

Overseas applicants should arrange for full formal transcripts of their academic records to be sent by their university to the Research Postgraduate Admissions Tutor. Alternatively, they may be uploaded via the online application service. If the transcript is not in English it should beĀ  accompanied by a certified English translation.

Fees and Maintenance

There are a number of studentships available to UK and overseas applicants to cover both fees and maintenance. The Student Funding Office also has further details on the options available to postgraduate students.

The University requires self-funding students to supply a satisfactory financial guarantee before admission, to confirm that they have adequate funds to cover both fees and maintenance. Tuition fees should be paid in full before or at the start of study unless special arrangements have been made.
