Interdisciplinary environment

The Energy Management Group has offices in Merchant Venturers Building and in Queen's Building. The laboratories are situated in Queens Building and form part of the Bristol Laboratory for Advanced Dynamics (BLADE). Here the research and development is carried out, and undergraduate and postgraduate students are trained in electric vehicle drive trains, energy harvesting, smart grid components, power electronics and machine design.

Capabilities

  • Advanced control of power distribution in aircraft; safety-critical distributed generation and distribution.
  • High-fidelity AC/AC power conversion equipment for the optimisation of drive efficiency, this is equally applicable to networks.
  • Medium power (up to 1 MVA) power management dynamic testing, and hardware-in-the-loop simulation.
  • Advanced generator technologies exploiting recent advances in magnetic materials, high strength composites, power electronics and digital control.
  • Advanced sensing and control.
  • Joint design and manufacture of machines, drives, electronics.
  • Simulation tools and techniques spanning systems and sub-components.
  • Environmental chambers and calorimeters.

Other research labs in BLADE

  • Hydraulics test facility
  • Composite fibre laboratory
  • Aerodynamics
