Historically, the group's strengths lay in improving the energy efficiency in high-tech aerospace and vehicle applications, where the power density and the energy efficiency need to be highly optimised. The rise in demand for the careful management of energy flows has allowed the group's research to expand into many new research areas where the efficient generation, utilisation, monitoring and management of electrical energy are desired.

The research themes shown below are the focus of the Electrical Energy Management Research Group. By ‘theme’ we mean research activities that have spanned many years, and that have consisted of many collaborative research & development projects and PhD projects. Prototyping and test facilities have been established in these theme areas, which have allowed the researchers to prove new concepts before transferring technologies to industry.
