Title: Networks and Hierarchies in Transnational Knowledge Control: Cognitive Authority and Epistemic Arbitrage

In this interdisciplinary seminar Broome and Seabrooke explore how actors gain control over transnational knowledge in the worlds of firms, International Organizations, and Non-Governmental Organizations. They discuss how transnational knowledge control is considered across scholarly fields and then hone in on two mechanisms: cognitive authority and epistemic arbitrage. The first works in systems where hierarchy is prominent. The latter operates best in more network-like structures. Broome and Seabrooke explore these mechanisms of knowledge control, drawing on a range of cases.
