Dr. Steven Proud delivers first in 2017 'Best of Bristol' lecture series
20 March 2017
The demise of the lecture? Or has its death been widely misreported?
Dr. Steven Proud gave a talk at the Wills Memorial Theatre on 14 March 2017, about the importance of the lecture as a method of transmitting knowledge from lecturer to student, despite the fact that the growth of certain technologies such as MOOCs and SPOCs is making lecture attendance less valuable.
Dr. Proud’s talk was the first in the 2017 ‘Best of Bristol’ lecture series, which exposes excellent teaching at the University. The lecture series is voted for by students; the lecturers with the highest number of votes are asked to deliver a lecture of their choice aimed at a lay audience.
Steven also discussed the role of ‘lecture capture’ - a lecture video - as a tool for students (this is seen by students as a complement to, rather than a substitute for, teaching); and how lectures might be made more relevant to the 21st century.
