Accounting and Finance students receive an introduction to investment banking
13 November 2019
Accounting and Finance students interested in pursuing a career in investment banking were offered a comprehensive introduction to industry fundamentals earlier this month in a workshop led by investment banking, asset and wealth management training group, Financial Edge.
Financial Edge trainer Jonathan Rugg, a chartered management accountant with over 10 years’ experience in the finance industry, conducted the workshop which sought to equip students with the knowledge required to undertake an internship within this competitive sector.
‘The value of these workshops is that they take all the information students need to know and put it together in one place’ Rugg explained. ‘While students may have access to titbits of information from the internet and other resources, it’s very difficult, using this kind of approach, to develop a full picture of how all of this material relates to each other in practice’.
Throughout the workshop, students were given an in-depth overview of some important finance and accounting theory and principles, from financial maths fundamentals to accounting and valuation fundamentals and application, as well as relevant practical guidance on the use of Microsoft Excel.
‘The pace and level of the day was well-tailored to my ability.’ One student said. ‘Jonathan was engaging and knowledgeable throughout the whole day and I would 100% recommend this experience to friends.’
‘I liked how we went through examples.’ Another student remarked. ‘It wasn’t just plain slides; it was really interactive and helpful. Not only do I think my banking knowledge has improved but also my excel skills.’
