Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreements and the Political Economy of an Uneven and Combined Europe

    Citation

Schwartz, G, 2016, ‘Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreements and the Political Economy of an Uneven and Combined Europe’.

    Abstract

This paper charts changes in work and employment in the Ľviv Region as part of DCFTA. Based on an extended case study involving workers, employment agencies and employers, it considers how changes in labour market participation, economic activity, labour contracts and occupational structure affect the expanded European political economy and its relative global position. The paper argues that, while DCFTA appears to benefit Ukraine and the EU, institutional configurations that consolidate informality, flexibilisation, low wages and minimal social guarantees can also lock-in the structural asymmetry of CEE economies in the EU, thus threatening the fragile stability reached within the EU.
