The Engineering Faculty Board has adopted regulations to permit the use of only certain types of calculator in examinations. Only calculators appearing on the approved list and carrying the appropriate seal will be allowed in exams and progress tests.
The seal is in the form of a destructible sticky label which is attached to the calculator. It is designed to be an easily visible 'badge' to facilitate invigilators' recognition of approved calculators during exams.
Seals are issued free of charge from the Faculty Computer Help Desk in 1.07 MVB, 12.45-1.15 Monday - Friday in weeks 1-24 only.
No guarantee is made that seals will be available after week 24, but if they are, then a charge may be made for issuing late seals!

It is a disciplinary offence for a student to take a calculator into an exam or progress test if the calculator is not approved and sealed. Candidates doing this are cheating and will be dealt with under the appropriate regulations.
If you have a calculator which meets the criteria below but does not appear on the approved list overleaf, you may apply to have it added to the list, provided you do so before 1st May. The sort of calculator that is permitted will typically have a few memories and a full range of functions including those normally found in five-figure tables. Such a calculator will typically cost under £12.
| Criteria | Permission |
|---|---|
| Calculator has graphical display | not allowed |
| Calculator can store a user program of more than a few steps | not allowed |
| Calculator can perform symbolic integration or differentiation | not allowed |
| Calculator can only solve up to a 3x3 matrix numerically | allowed |
| Calculator can store text in memories | not allowed |
You are generally encouraged to make use of the best available technology (including Faculty computer facilities) for all your work except examinations and formal tests.
Medical exemptions will be decided on an individual basis and you should contact your department in the first instance.
Calculators which will not be permitted for Examinations and formal tests are those which have graphical displays or equation-solving capabilities or which are capable of storing and running non-trivial programs or text. Note: The HP 32S (Reverse Polish Notation) calculator (and other calculators with permanent memories) may be used on condition that the permanent memories are cleared before every exam.
The following represents a list of calculators which meet the Faculty of Engineering regulations for the use of calculators in exams, provided they also carry a seal.
Applications for adding to this list, calculators which meet the criteria should initially be directed to Andrew Dixon. Please bring both the calculator and the instruction manual with you if possible to Monday Help Desk, or exceptionally to his office. The list will not be extended after 1st May!
Any letters may follow the model numbers. e.g. a Casio fx-83 includes a Casio fx-83WHA.
Recommended calculators are normally available from Argos, WHSmiths and Rymans.
