Internship Scheme

A number of leading Civil and Structural Engineering companies currently offer internships to Bristol Civil Engineering undergraduates. Some companies also offer a bursary or sponsorship in addition to the paid summer vacation employment. The purpose of the scheme is to give vacation employment, professional and financial support to students during their academic career, to encourage their commitment to a career in Civil Engineering.

Some companies also offer a bursary in addition to the paid vacation employment, or a full Industrial Scholarship which lasts for at least two years. Although there is no prior commitment from either party, it is anticipated the relationship will develop further at the end of the two-year scholarship period.  Students undertake paid employment for the company for typically 8-12 weeks in the summer vacations, with perhaps a 50/50 split between office and site work.  For those companies who are able to offer a bursary, we suggest that students will receive at least £1,500 p.a. after the first period of employment, with a similar award made in the following academic year(s).

Other organisations are offering paid employment for typically 8-12 weeks during the summer vacation with no further commitment.  Nevertheless it is hoped that the company will employ the student again in future years.

Those companies who are offering placements for the 2013-2014 academic year can be seen on this spreadsheet.

The Internship Scheme is aimed at first year students. We believe that it is important for first year students to gain work experience in a relevant engineering company early on in their studies, so that they are inspired to pursue a career in this area. However, if a company would prefer to receive applications from first and second years students this can be accommodated.

Details

Students apply for the internships using a standard application form (Word, 26kB). The applications (in electronic format) should be submitted via Blackboard and will then be forwarded to the companies; this process is coordinated by the Faculty's Industrial Liaison Office. Students are selected by the firms for interview, which are held at the University.  General advice on filling in application forms is provided the University's Careers Service and further advice is given in the Civil Engineering Studies course and on Blackboard.
