ACCIS CDT students support primary school careers day

ACCIS CDT students talk to local primary school pupils about their chosen careers as part of a fun 'market-place' style Careers Day. Pupils primed with questions were sent on a fact-finding-mission to find out more about a wide variety of different jobs.

Two PhD students, Steve Grey and Jonathan Stacey, from the ESPRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Advanced Composites for Innovation and Science (ACCIS CDT), attended a Primary Careers Event at St Werburghs Primary School which aimed to inspire children moving to secondary school with the wide range of job opportunities available in life.

The event took place on the 6 July, and was attended by pupils aged 7 to 11 from St Werburghs Primary School and three other local schools.

Steve and Jonathan showcased engineering and scientific careers, presenting a wide range of props including composite structures and samples from The Bristol Composites Institute (ACCIS), wing and rotor blade sections from the Department of Aerospace Engineering, and model rockets from Bristol SEDS. Both students really enjoyed the day, and were deeply impressed by the enthusiasm for science and mathematics among the children – several of them could already talk a lot about carbon fibre, Kevlar and graphene!

Other attendees showcasing their jobs included representatives from Babcock, Bristol Old Vic Theatre, Kier Group, and a local Police Community Support Officer.

Steve said: “I was really pleased by the number of children who said to me that they loved maths and science at school and were really excited about what we do. My personal highlight has to be watching their amazement when they saw some of the props that we brought along.”

Jonathan said: “It was a really enjoyable day – the pupils were really enthusiastic and evidently very bright and knowledgeable. We can be sure of some great scientists and engineers in the future.”
