ACCIS student wins SIMULIA project of the year 2017
13 July 2017
Gaetano Arena, an ACCIS second year PhD student, has won SIMULIA Project of the Year 2017.
Every year Dassault Systems organises a competition for the best project of the year (CATIA, SIMULIA and SOLID WORKS). Gaetano Arena’s project, Adaptive Nonlinear Structures of Flow Regulation was chosen Project of the Year 2017 – SIMULIA Brand by the jury at Dassault Systemes headquarters in Paris.
Gaetano’s project exploits structural instabilities for the design of a shape changing air duct. The device comprises a shape-changing post-buckled composite component that can adapt its configuration in response to varying operating conditions. The inlet aperture is regulated without external mechanisms for actuation and only relies on the pressure field imposed on the structure by the surrounding fluid. ABAQUS is used to design the nonlinear behaviour of the post-buckled composite plate and to simulate its interaction with the airflow.
As the overall winner, Gaetano received an Apple watch. Details of Gaetano’s success will also be published on the SIMULIA website.
