ACCIS CDT student’s paper in journal ‘Highlights of 2017’

An article authored by EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Advanced Composites for Innovation and Science (ACCIS CDT) student Mat Tolladay has been included in the Nanotechnology Journal’s Highlights of 2017.
The paper on the Piezoelectric effects in boron nitride nanotubes predicted by the atomistic finite element method and molecular mechanics (M. Tolladay, D. Ivanov, N.L. Allan, F. Scarpa) was included in a subsection of outstanding articles on the topic ‘Materials: properties, characterization or tools’.
The Highlights of 2017 collection showcases some of the Nanotechnology journal’s best publications from 2017 across all sections of the journal. Articles were selected based on a range of criteria including referee endorsements, presentation of outstanding research and popularity with the journal’s online readership. All articles in the collection are free to read for the rest of 2018.
Mat said, “This was a very nice surprise as this is the first journal paper I have authored. The work examines one of the problems relating to nanotechnology simulations, namely the difficulty of spanning different length scales in a computationally efficient manner. The recognition for the work is a great encouragement and I look forward to writing more papers in the future.”
Professor Fabrizio Scarpa, Mat’s primary supervisor, said: “Mat has done an outstanding piece of scholarly work. The paper not only describes a new methodology, with results that will benefit the whole nanomechanics community; it also provides an exhaustive and detailed critique of existing methods, and gives very important recommendations on how to efficiently use simulation methods for the prediction of the piezoelectricity in these new classes of nanostructures.”
