Research summary

Current research is based on manipulating the performance of advanced composites strcutures as part of the EPSRC High Performance Ductile Composite Technology (HiPerDuCT). This project is in collaboration with Imperial College.

Also I support the experimental research aspects across many projects within ACCIS.

Previous research project was the SMARTCOMP partnership with GE Aviation which started in January 2006 and was completed in Decmeber 2010. The research examined novel methods of actuation, sensing and health monitoring of composite structures, with topics to include shape memory metals and polymers, electroactive polymers and control aspects.

Previous work has examined multifunctional fibres for composite systems, which was funded ...

Julie obtained a Materials Science and Engineering B.Eng. from Brunel University in 1998. From there she worked at DERA Farnborough (now Qinetiq) within the Adhesives section for one year before embarking on a PhD research project.

The PhD research was carried out at Cranfield University, RMCS Shrivenham and involved the fatigue durability of embedded Fabry-Pérot optical fibre sensors embedded in carbon fibre reinforced composites.

Julie joined the department in February 2003 to investigate the use of multifunctional fibre reinforced composites.

Since taking on the Faculty Safety Manager & Advisor role for the Faculty of Engineering, Julie has achieved the ...
