As a practicing ecologist and botanical specialist, I have worked with civil engineers in the public and private sectors since the 1980s. Following five years developing an environmental assessment unit for a local authority, I then joined the multinational Halcrow Group where I worked as a senior and principal scientist for nine years. Much of my work centred on the assessment and mitigation of the ecological effects of transport infrastructure, especially roads and bridges. The study of plants and those other organisms traditionally studied by botanists has been the central theme of my career. I gained a first class honours degree in Botany from the University of Bristol in 1981 and was subsequently awarded the Rose Bracher Prize. Winning a SERC departmental quota award enabled me to carry out three years taxonomic work on the Fumariaceae, a group of plants used in the pharmaceutical industry, with a view to clarifying their identification at the species level.
