Research summary
I am principally interested in mathematical modelling of real-world systems, from engineering to the life sciences. I work in the general area of nonlinear dynamical systems, especially those that are nonsmooth. Some current research projects include
- Hearing mechanisms in mammals and insects,
- High-speed atomic force microscopy,
- Temperature-mediated architectural adaptations of plants,
- Noise and vibration in gearboxes,
- Impact and friction in mechanical oscillators.
Biography
I am a Senior Lecturer and Programme Director in the Department of Engineering Mathematics, and a member of the Applied Nonlinear Mathematics research group.
