His research interests cover a variety of wireless communications techniques. Having originally specialised in Physical Layer work and OFDM in particular, he has in recent years expanded his interest to cover more MAC and RRM aspects of wireless and has embraced a cross layer approach to wireless system design. This has been applied in recent years to specific standards such as 802.11 (WiFi), 802.16 (WiMax) and LTE (B3G cellular) as well are core theoretical work.
Dr Armour has been an academic at Bristol since 2001 and has held the post of Senior Lecturer since 2007. He obtained his BEng degree from the University of Bath in 1996 and his PhD from the University of Bristol in 2001.
He has lead collaborative projects with a number of industrial partners, including Toshiba and Kyocera and now leads Bristol’s involvement in the MVCE’s Green Radio project. MVCE is a collaborative organisation formed of a large number of global industrial partners sponsoring research work across a consortium of leading UK Universities.
He currently supervises 12 PhD students and 2 Postdoctoral Research Assistants.
Simon has published approximately 100 papers in international journals and conferences and has filed 11 patents. The majority of the latter are now owned by industry including one, for which he was a lead inventor, assigned to an industrial partner for a substantial, confidential, sum.
