The CSN Group was formed in 1985 to address the research demands of the fixed and wireless communications sectors. It combines fundamental academic research with a strong level of industrial application. The Group has well-equipped laboratories with state-of-the-art test and measurement equipment and first-class computational facilities.

For more than 25 years the Group has worked alongside industry to develop and exploit key connectivity technologies. Examples include:

  • Bandwidth efficient modulation & coding;
  • Smart antenna solutions;
  • Efficient linear power amplifiers;
  • Flexible RF transceivers;
  • High-throughput wireless LANs;
  • Multiple antenna (MIMO) architectures & algorithms;
  • Green radio.

The Group is particularly well known for its pioneering work in antennas & propagation (multi-element channel sounders and ray-based propagation models).

Current research addresses topics such as the Internet of Things (IoT), TV White Space, small-cell mmWave communications (backhaul & access), software-defined networks and the wireless/optical interface. These technologies are critical in the development of efficient and cost-effective 5G networks.

Expanding on its core communications expertise, the CSN Group has grown to address major societal themes such as healthcare (medical imaging, nano antennas & wireless sensor networks), transport (automotive & rail communications) and energy (ICT for smart grids & cities).

The CSN Group is led by Professor Kevin Morris and comprises 10 academics, 40 PhD students and 10 research staff.
