Pre-sessional application

How do I apply?

Do I have to pay the deposit?

Yes, if you have applied for the Pre-sessional academic English, we ask that all applicants to pay the £300 deposit.

This non-refundable deposit covers the cost of essential administrative procedures. In exceptional circumstances, such as an unsuccessful visa application or failure to meet the entry requirements, a refund of the deposit will be considered.

Are bank transfer charges included within the pre-sessional fee?

Unfortunately not. You must cover all charges that may be incurred when you transfer money from your home currency into pounds. Please make sure that we receive the correct fees for the course or we will not be able to process your application.

If you have any questions about bank transfer charges, you should contact your bank. They will advise you whether they will charge you any transfer fee in order to make a payment for your pre-sessional course.

What is the application deadline?

Six weeks before the start of the course. Due to the popularity of many programmes we recommend that you apply for your chosen programme as soon as possible.

If you are waiting for a decision from the University of Bristol about your degree application, please be patient. YOur School/Department will contact you with details of your offer.

If you are planning to re-take your IELTS or TOEFL, or if you are awaiting a result, please apply for the Pre-sessional course. We will hold your application until you provide us with a copy of your IELTS or TOEFL certificate by email.

CELFS may need to close applications at short notice - the closing dates will be advertised on our web site, please check regularly for updated information.

Does the fee include tuition and accommodation?

No, the tuition fee stated on this website is for tuition only. Information about University accommodation can be found on the Accommodation Office website.

Can I pay my fees in instalments?

This option is not available for the Pre-sessional courses.

Before the start of your course, the Centre will send you an email to ask you to pay your course fees using an online payment system.

For the Pre-sessional academic English course, you will need to pay a deposit of £300 to secure a place on the course, followed by the remaining course fees. The remaining course fees are the total course fees minus the deposit that you will have already paid.

Do you offer any discounts/scholarships?

Unfortunately, there is no funding available for scholarships.

Do I pay less if I am a UK resident/EU citizen?

All students pay the same fee regardless of nationality, because the courses are self-financing.

Can I apply even if I have not yet taken the IELTS/TOEFL test?

Yes, you can apply, even if you do not yet have an IELTS or TOEFL certificate.

If you apply without supplying an IELTS of TOEFL certificate, we will set a deadline by which you must provide them (by post, email or fax). We will put your application on hold, this means we will not process it until you provide a copy of your test certificate.

Which Pre-sessional course should I choose?

It is very important for you to choose the most appropriate course between Course A (ten weeks) and Course B (six weeks). You need to consider your current English level and the level you need at the end of the course.

Can I do the Pre-sessional course without taking IELTS/TOEFL?

No, to be able to study on the Pre-sessional course, you must have a valid SELT (secure English language test). When you apply to the Pre-sessional course, we need some evidence of your English language level, and the University of Bristol prefers IELTS, or if this is not possible, TOEFL.
