Recycling : What Happens To It?

Focus on Confidential Paper

Each year we collect around 340 tonnes of paper from the University ranging from confidential office paper to lower grade newspapers magazines and envelopes.  About 15% of total paper collected is confidential paper. The confidential paper is collected by secure shredding company ‘Shred it’. Shred it shred all of our paper while still at the University using their specially designed vehicle shredders. From the University the shredded paper is taken to their secure storage facility where it is baled into half tonne bales and then transported to a paper mills in the North of England such as Kruger for manufacture into tissue products. http://www.kruger.co.uk/index_kruger.html.

However it is important to remember that paper, like many other items recovered for recycling, is a commodity like any other that can benefit from international markets as long as this is managed correctly. At the University we use recycling contractors that focus on UK markets as a priority to ensure all recycling is managed responsibly.
