1.    What are the rules on disabled parking?

Disabled staff can apply for a parking permit to park at the University. Please see the University's Staff Car Parking pages for full details of the scheme and how to apply.

2.    Can a disabled visitor park in a disabled University bay providing they display their Blue Badge?

No, bays marked as disabled in University car parks are not designed for visitors as they are allocated to staff and students who are registered to use the spaces. Instead, visitor parking should be requested. If you wish to book an accessible parking space for a visitor, please contact Car Parking to ensure a space is allocated in an appropriate location. You will need to provide the visitor's vehicle registration and, as with all visitors, a fee of 2.50 (half day) or 5.00 (full day) will be charged to the Department hosting the visitor. Please note that as of November 2015 these fees will rise to 3.50 (half day) or 7.00 (full day).

Blue Badge holders can of course use the parking rights they are given on public highways, which includes many roads around the University.

3.    Who can I talk to within Human Resources about my disability?  

Your Faculty HR Manager should be able to advise you on any issue connected to your disability.  Alternatively, you may wish to contact Tracy Brunnock, Organisational Development Manager (Diversity).   

 

4.    Does the University have any guidance for disabled staff?

Yes.  A Staff Guide on Disability and Employment provides information for disabled members of staff as well as managers.

5.    I am thinking of applying for a job at the University.  Can I talk to someone about my specific requirements due to my disability?

The job advert will provide contact details of a member of staff that applicants can call or email.  You can contact this member of staff to discuss any requirements due to your disability.  This would also include arranging necessary support for an interview.

6.    Can Disability Services book communication support workers for University events and staff?

Disability Services accepts requests for communication support (i.e. sign language interpreters and electronic notetakers) for University staff and events.  However, being a student support service Disability Services has to prioritise students, so it may not be possible at certain times of the year (e.g. the beginning of the new academic year in October).  It is still worth asking at these times as Disability Services staff will do their best to help.  Bookings are subject to both support worker availability and the costs of the support being met.

7.    Can I bring my disability assistance dog into the office?

In most cases you can bring your assistance dog into the workplace depending upon the nature of the work you do, as reasonable adjustments have to be made to accommodate your disability.  Consideration has to be given to other members of staff in the workplace that your assistance dog will be in and the need to ensure that there is somewhere suitable for the dog for example, under a desk.  This should be managed at school level.  The Health and Safety Office can provide guidance as necessary.

8.    I have just had an accident and am worried about how I am going to cope back at work.  Is there anyone I can turn to for help?  I may not be able to lift or carry things for a while.

In the first instance you should talk to your Line Manager/Head of School who will liaise with your HR Manager if necessary.  You may be referred to the University's Occupational Health Service who will be able to advise on an individual basis and may carry out an assessment of fitness to work following an injury.  It may be that your job tasks need to be altered for a short while to accommodate your recovery or a phased return to work may ease the transition.

9.    I don't call myself disabled, but I do have a health problem that causes me to be off work regularly.  Should I discuss this with my Line Manager?  

Yes.  Any information that you provide will be dealt with in strict confidence and will enable your manager to enter into a discussion with you about what support you may require.

10.    What are the roles of the Occupational Health Service and Health and Safety Office?  How can they help me if I am disabled, or have a short or long-term health problem?

The Occupational Health Service (OHS) offer many services including:

  • Assessment of fitness for work after illness or injury;
  • Rehabilitation plans;
  • Health surveillance depending on the nature of the job;
  • Individual referrals via Personnel Managers;
  • Workplace assessments;
  • Informal health advice to individuals

If you feel that you have an issue that would benefit from an assessment by the OHS you should inform your manager. 

Your manager or your HR Manager may refer you to the OHS if expert advice is required on any necessary adjustments to support you or if your individual circumstances should change (for example, if your disability is progressive in nature).   

The Health and Safety Office provides professional advice and support to the University on managing the health and safety risks arising from its activities.  The Health and Safety Office:

  • Offers specialist advice and knowledge in all aspects of health and safety to ensure legal compliance;
  • Advises on and undertakes health and safety training;
  • Carries out investigations of serious accidents and dangerous occurrences;
  • Carries out audits to monitor the health and safety management and arrangements within Schools and Units;
  • Complements and supports the work of Departmental Safety Advisors.

If you have a health and safety concern, please contact your Departmental Safety Advisor or Trade Union Safety Representative initially.  The Health and Safety Office can also provide advice to individuals.

11.    I have heard about Access to Work but who are they and what do they do?

Access to Work is a programme run by the Department for Work and Pensions and provides support to disabled people to help them overcome work-related obstacles resulting from their disability through paying towards equipment, adapting premises, or a support worker.  The application process for assistance under this programme should be implemented as soon as possible and is as follows:

  • As the disabled employee, you should contact your regional Access to Work contact centre to enquire about receiving funding;
  • If eligible, you should complete an application form.  Upon receipt of the completed form, an Access to Work Adviser will contact you and your manager to reach a decision about what support is required;
  • Written confirmation of the approved level of support and the grant available will be sent to you and your manager;
  • Your manager will arrange the agreed support and will buy the necessary equipment. Your manager will then claim the repayment of the approved support costs from Access to Work.

The amount of funding available from Access to Work will vary depending on individual circumstances and may cover:
