Background

Development proposals have been brought forward by the University to refurbish and improve the Fry Building in order to provide a new home for the School of Mathematics. The Fry Building used to house the University’s School of Biological Sciences which in July 2014, relocated to the new Life Sciences Building on St Michael’s Hill.

The Fry Building is located on a triangular site between Woodland Road and University Road with the Wills Memorial Tower to the south. It is Grade II listed and lies within the Tyndall’s Park Conservation Area.

Project outline

The design is focused on the refurbishment of the main listed buildings.  The project would also include some demolition of the more modern, poor quality additions and the possibility of some new extensions in order to create a major focal point and begin to form links to adjacent University buildings and Tyndall Avenue. The proposals also take account of some of the key aspirations in the Supplementary Planning Guidance 11 and masterplan for the University precinct which was adopted by Bristol City Council in 2006.

Facing south from the entrance lobby will be a new atrium leading to the southern courtyard. The atrium itself will integrate public art in the form of a brise soleil screen formed in a mathematical Voronoi diagram.

Enabling works

Enabling works

Enabling works were completed over the summer vacation, demolishing the old courtyard buildings. The space created will be used to build a new lecture theatre at lower ground level and a courtyard extension for outdoor seating, studying and teaching.

Within this new courtyard area a separate landscaped terrace will be created at ground floor level with a raised lawn. The atrium will lead out directly on to this level.

As these plans progress the University and its project team would like to hear the views of those living and working in the area and also feedback from University staff and students.
