About the Education Support Unit

The Education Support Unit is part of the Academic Registry and provides a range of support for new and established members of academic staff involved in teaching, supporting student learning, and assessment.

Staff in the unit have academic, professional or administrative backgrounds and between them a wide experience of academic practice, including quality assurance and educational development. They can provide advice about:

• learning, teaching and assessment methods, including e-learning and e-assessment and student skills development
• the use of university supported e-learning tools including the university’s virtual learning environment, Blackboard
• quality assurance in higher education – specific to the University and more widely
• external initiatives, such as development projects, policy changes or consultations initiated by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), the Higher Education Academy (HEA), Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) and the European Union.

The Unit supports staff involved in education at all levels – undergraduate and postgraduate, including research degrees of all kinds. We can provide advice and support to any member of staff and we work closely with the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education) and faculty officers with teaching and learning related portfolios (e.g. undergraduate and graduate deans, faculty education directors and faculty e-learning advisors). 

We provide a programme of hands-on workshops and other development opportunities free of charge for all staff.  We also work closely with Information Services and other groups in the University to ensure that the infrastructure is appropriate for education and keeping abreast with academic needs.  Contributors to the University’s Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (TLHE) programme for new academic staff are based in or attached to the Unit, which is responsible for the management and quality assurance of that programme.
