The University introduced the Open Units Scheme to allow undergraduate students the opportunity to undertake a number of credit points in an area outside their main degree subject. Under the Open Unit scheme single honours students will normally be able to choose a minimum of 20 credit points worth of Open Units in the year(s) of study in the programme determined by the academic school in which the degree is based.
An ‘open unit’ is a unit that is outside of the student’s subject discipline and any student can take (i.e. not have any pre- or co-requisites), subject to space and timetabling constraints.
A number of units have been identified by academic schools as being particularly suitable to be taken as Open Units by students from any faculty; these are listed in the Unit Catalogue. Information about the Scheme, timetabling, when to register and which programmes allow its students to take open units are available from the links at the top of this page. New students should consult their timetables before visiting the Open Units Fair (which is held in introductory week) to sign up for open units.
Students are advised to consult their home school when considering choosing Open Units and with questions about registering, timetabling and other general queries. Please note that the Education Support Unit does not manage open units or registrations. If you have any queries you will need to contact the School which provides the unit. If you have any problems finding this information you are advised to contact your programme administrator who should be able to help you.
