Staff development workshops

Note: we can often tailor and run ad hoc workshops (e.g. for a specific department or project) on the topics below as well as many others. If you are interested in this email e-learning@bristol.ac.uk and someone will contact you to discuss your requirements.


Introduction to Blackboard for academic and research staff

Course Description:

Blackboard is the University of Bristol’s centrally supported Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Blackboard provides a range of tools for communication, collaboration, and assessment as well as offering an online area to share resources like course notes and reading lists. This workshop will provide an introduction to Blackboard’s tools and features. As part of the workshop participants will build their own Blackboard course and if possible should bring materials such as reading lists, lecture notes or ideas for online activities to the workshop.

 The aim of this workshop is to provide a concise overview of the tools and features of Blackboard, enable participants to create their own courses and share ideas on how Blackboard can be used to support learning and teaching based on examples from the University of Bristol.

This course is intended for all academic and research staff who are new to Blackboard or wish to refresh their knowledge. Participants are encouraged to bring materials they wish to publish online (Word documents, web pages, Powerpoints, etc.) to work with during the session.

Introduction to Blackboard for administrative and support staff

Course Description:

Blackboard is the University of Bristol's centrally supported Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Blackboard provides a range of tools for communication, collaboration, and assessment as well as offering an online area to share resources like course notes and reading lists.  This workshop will provide an introduction to the key  features of Blackboard most used by administrative and support staff, including:

Using and Creating Digital Video

Course Description:

This workshop is intended for staff  who wish to explore the potential uses of video to support learning and teaching. Digital video is rapidly becoming more affordable and easier to use, making it possible to create your own video-based learning resources. The increasing availability of video tools coincides with a very strong trend towards accessing media over the Internet and on mobile devices. The workshop aims to give an overview of the subject and to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to get started. By the end of the workshop participants will have:

An introduction to Questionmark Perception

Course Description:                                                                                            

Since the introduction of the Questionmark Perception  e-Assessment system 6 years ago, uptake of e-assessment at the University has grown rapidly. Interactive assessment by computer offers a range of benefits to teachers and students; e.g. instant marking, immediate feedback, a wider range of assessment types, flexibility of time and place.

Aims:
This workshop provides an introduction to Questionmark Perception, a dedicated and powerful online assessment system that is being used by several Departments/ Schools to deliver diagnostic, formative and summative assessments to students on and outside the University campus. The workshop includes;

Pre-requisites:Participants should know how to use a Web browser. Prior to the face to face session participants will need to have taken the online tutorial ‘writing effective assessment questions for online delivery’. Participants may wish to bring an example of an assessment that is currently delivered on paper.

Creating Online Tutorials

Course Description:

This practical workshop is intended for anyone who wishes to explore how the use of online self study tutorials can improve (and make more efficient) learning, teaching, training and how to go about creating them. Much of the workshop is hands on - participants will learn how to build an online tutorial using Wimba Create. This is an easy to use add-in tool for MS Word that is freely available to all University of Bristol staff and students. It produces structured web based tutorials that can incorporate navigation between pages, self-test questions, multimedia and other interactive elements. When complete, these materials can be delivered via DVD or any online space such as Blackboard. By the end of the workshop participants will have:

Blending e-Learning With Your Face-to-Face Teaching

Course Description:

This workshop is intended for staff who wish to explore ways to support and enhance learning and teaching by blending use of technology with established methods of face-to-face (F2F) teaching.

It is itself run in a blended format, incorporating online activities before, in between and after two F2F workshops. Each F2F session will last an hour and a half. Participants will also be expected to spend 2 to 3 hours over a 2 week period participating in the online components, which will include discussion, collaborative work and individual research and planning.

Participants will experience blended learning from student and teacher perspectives. They will explore and discuss case studies which illustrate blended learning approaches. They will evaluate which types of activities best suit online or F2F environments, consider potential opportunities within their own contexts, and plan a blended learning activity or series of activities.

Objectives:  By the end of the workshops and online activities participants will have:
•    Explored, experienced and evaluated a range of examples of blended learning from student and teacher perspectives
•    Considered opportunities for blended learning within their own contexts
•    Planned a blended learning activity or sequence of activities.

Pre-requisites: Some familiarity with learning technologies, e.g. Blackboard, would be useful though not essential.

Duration: 2 face-to-face workshops, lasting a total of 3 hours, plus online activities. Recommended time to allow for participation in the online components is 2 - 3 hours over a period of 2 weeks.  Participation can be flexible within the 2 week period, but many people find that they like to devote at least a few minutes on a daily basis.

Planning for e-submission and e-marking

Course Description:

"e-submission" refers to the process by which a student submits work online for storage and retrieval by academic, administrative or other staff for marking, feedback or review . "e-marking" describes the process by which staff provide marks and feedback to students online e.g. through an annotated Word document.

e-submission and e-marking can both be done through Blackboard.

This workshop is intended for academic or administrative staff who are either considering or already involved in planning  e-submission and/or e-marking.  The main focus is on rationale and planning as opposed to detailed practical  work with e-submission tools, although resources, such as step-by-step guides, will be provided to help staff put plans into action after the workshop.

Participants will

   1. explore and discuss potential reasons for the use of e-submission and e-marking

   2. consider potential administrative and educational benefits, such as improving feedback, as well as issues

   3. examine who and what an e-submission/e-marking workflow may involve, including typical student, academic and

      admin roles

   4. look at stages in planning and implementation

   5. consider how plagiarism checking can be incorporated

   6. plan and design their own workflow

Blackboard Drop In Sessions

Blackboard: One time, one place, one process

Course Description:

Blackboard Content system is an extension of Bristol’s centrally supported Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

There is always key administrative information that needs to be provided to staff and students from simple things like the opening hours of a School office to the more complicated such as how to apply for extenuating circumstances.  Using the Content system allows you to display the information in many places but only requires you to change it in one when you wish to update.

Blackboard: More than just content

Blackboard Content system is an extension of Bristol’s centrally supported Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

The Content system makes adding and updating materials for your Blackboard course quicker and easier supporting drag and drop functionality. 

But there is so much more it can do – save time updating by using a single file in multiple courses, let external lecturers add their files to your course without needing an account, give students the ability to edit and add files in the course, pull library and other central materials into your course.
