Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

The University's teaching and learning programme aims to help all involved with teaching students become established and confident in their teaching. It is offered to full-time and part-time academic staff, research staff, postgraduate teaching assistants and more experienced staff at the University of Bristol.

In line with the University's career grade pathway, it seeks to develop a continuing professional development ethos and is mapped onto the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education (UKPSF).  Evidence of growing competence and understanding of issues forms the basis of self-assessment and appraisal of progress in the areas of teaching, learning and assessment.

It acknowledges the different starting points of individuals and recognises that many postgraduate teaching assistants go on to become research staff and/or full academic staff members, either here or elsewhere.

The teaching and learning programme offers various provision for supporting:

The programme allows for progression between strands as the status of individuals changes.

Note that for academic staff and postgraduates/RAs who teach it is possible to follow the respective programme via two pathways and to gain HEA Associate Fellow/Fellow status.

*All new academics are required to fulfil the appropriate pathway requirements of the teaching and learning programme unless they can make a case for fast-tracking or exemption.
