Research Staff

Welcome to the University of Bristol Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (TLHE) programme for research staff and postgraduates who are engaged to teach and/or support students’ learning.

Research Staff (Academic Career Pathway 2): the programme is offered via two routes:

  1. for research staff who may only be undertaking small amounts of teaching, laboratory supervision, etc you will be expected to attend the 2-day programme;
  2. for those research staff who will progress to full academic careers (Pathway 1) at the University or if your teaching load is considered to be extensive it is possible to be considered for the academic programme (PG Cert in TLHE). Please contact the TLHE administrator if you wish to follow this route. You will require the consent of your Head of Department to ensure that you have sufficient time to complete it and will be asked to complete a short application form detailing your teaching experience. Acceptance onto the programme is subject to the Programme Director's approval.

The programme is designed along the same lines as the programmes for new academic staff and is mapped onto the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education (UKPSF).  You will be expected to attend a 2 day training programme (split over 2 weeks), the course will include sessions on small group teaching, lecturing and assessment method.  All those who attend are expected to do a short presentation to their colleagues.

The sessions have mixed faculty participation.  However, in response to feedback, for the 2011/12 academic year, we have introduced some Science specific and Arts/Social Sciences specific sessions.

Summary of progression through the programme

Attendance at the 2-day programme will allow you to continue to teach at the University.

There is also an option to carry out a 4000 word assignment to gain 20 credits at Master’s level and this option leads to an Accredited Certificate of Completion. This route leads to exemption from  Unit 1, Teaching and Learning on main academic programme should you take it in the future and eligibility to apply for HEA Associate Fellowship.  In addition, staff can attend any of the optional units on the main programme.

Summary of the core and accredited pathways
