Research degree prizes

Research Thesis Prizes awarded by the Research Degrees Examination Board

Eligibility

An annual prize is made for the thesis considered to be the best within each Faculty and for which a degree has been awarded in the relevant academic year.

Nomination Process

Internal and External Examiners are invited to nominate suitable theses on the Examiners’ Joint Final Report Form. Nominations will be noted at the Research Degrees Examination Board at which the degree is awarded.

Judging Process

The complete set of examiners’ report forms for each nominated candidate within each faculty will be collated in advance of the first Research Degrees Examination Board of the following Academic Year and distributed to all members with the Board paperwork.

The Graduate Dean of each Faculty is asked to order the nominations for their Faculty according to merit in advance of the Board meeting. In making this judgement the Graduate Dean will consider the Examiners’ comments and may seek opinions from Heads of Department and Supervisors where appropriate.

At the Board meeting, members are invited to accept or challenge the proposed order and the Board will agree the winners

Announcement of Results

Once the awards have been agreed the winners will be informed, and their respective Heads of Department asked to arrange for brief citations to be provided to the Board. Using this information the Board will make an official announcement regarding the year’s awards.
