About the school
Professor Conwy Lloyd Morgan
Psychology at the University of Bristol was established in 1901 with the appointment of Conwy Lloyd Morgan, the first UK Professor of Psychology (and Ethics).
Our current teaching and research spans developmental, social, cognitive and biological psychology, neuropsychology and vision science. This has applications in areas ranging from human performance, memory and communication, to addiction, obesity and neurological disease.
The School of Experimental Psychology is a collegiate place in which to work and study. We offer undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses, and have a lively and highly productive community of PhD students and research staff.
Teaching and research are carried out in state of the art laboratories within the school, and we also have access to brain imaging and clinical research facilities at Clinical Research and Imaging Centre (CRIC-Bristol). Staff and students benefit from cross-disciplinary collaborations with colleagues in Bristol Neuroscience and at the Department of Neuropsychology North Bristol NHS Trust.
The excellence of both our teaching and research has been confirmed in successive external assessments, including the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise which rated over 60% of the school’s submitted outputs in the highest two levels (“world-leading” and “internationally excellent”).
Reflecting the unparalleled international diversity of the University, our staff and students come from many countries, and we have numerous successful international research collaborations. Students benefit from being taught and supervised in an intellectually rich environment by staff who are working at the forefront of their research disciplines. Students therefore have the opportunity to contribute to the latest advances in psychology and, as a result, excel both personally and professionally.
Entrance to Experimental Psychology
The school is located close to the centre of the main University precinct, which itself is within easy walking distance of many of the attractions of the beautiful and vibrant city of Bristol.
Experimental Psychology is one of seven schools in the Faculty of Science, whose current strength in research and teaching places it in the elite group of science faculties in the UK.
