Biography

In 1995, I graduated with a BSc (Hons) Food Science (University of Plymouth) and completed an industrial placement year at the BBSRC Institute fo Food Research (Reading) working in the Department of Consumer Sciences with Professor Peter Rogers.  After graduation, I worked as a Research Associate on various research projects involved with food choice and appetite control.  I was awarded a Ph.D. in Psychology (University of Reading) for my work on 'The effects on macronutrients on appetite, mood and cognitive performance' (working with Professor Peter Rogers and Professor Tim Kirkham).  After a 10 year career break to raise a family, I was awarded a Daphne Jackson Fellowship in 2014.  I am now working in the Nutrition and Behaviour Unit (NBU) investigating factors affecting maternal eating behavior using quantitative and qualitative measures (The Mothers Eating and Drinking Study).

A significant element of the Daphne Jackson Research Fellowship scheme is refreshing and updating skills as a consequence of a career break.  I have gained experience in qualitative skills, NHS ethical approval, and novel psychophysical techniques to measure eating behavior.  I have also completed a Breastfeeding Specialist course (accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAHEEP)) and am currently gaining clinical practice to qualify as an IBCLC (Lactation Consultant).

This research is being carried out with Professors Peter Rogers and Jeff Brunstrom and Dr Danielle Ferriday from the Nutrition and Behaviour Unit (University of Bristol).

I am also currently working on research into the role and current practice of International Board Ceritified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) in Great Britain.  This work is being carried out in collaboration with Lactation Consultants of Great Britain, working closely with Zoe Faulkner, Chair of LCGB.
