I am an imaging scientist primarily interested in biophysical basis for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signals in living systems. NMR- based (or for brevity MR) imaging techniques, i.e. MR imaging (MRI) and MR spectroscopy (MRS), have become an inseparable part of the tool kit for neurosciences. The fact, that MR techniques provide nearly an unlimited number of tissue parameters to be revealed for quantification from the CNS, has driven their ever increasing applications in neurosciences. I have taken a technique driven approach to examine the brain. We have developed functional MRI (fMRI) techniques based on blood volume changes and ...
I received MD in 1980, followed by the PhD in Medical Biochemistry in 1984, both degrees from the University of Oulu, Oulu, Finland. My research interest in vivo physiology guided me to the fascinating world of (Nuclear) Magnetic Resonance (MR) in mid 80s that at that time was rapidly evolving as the modality of choice for non-invasive imaging of biochemistry, anatomy and physiology of living systems. After a sabbatical at the Royal College of Surgeons in England in London in 1988-89, I returned to Finland and established the Biological MR Laboratory at the University of Kuopio, Kuopio, followed by my ...
