Welcome to the Faculty of Medical and Veterinary Sciences, which comprises four Schools and the Centre for Comparative & Clinical Anatomy (CCCA), which have complementary teaching and research interests:
We have 430 staff, with 1400 undergraduate and 280 postgraduate students enrolled in the Faculty, and an annual spend of ~£60m. The Faculty exists on two main sites: the Centre for Comparative & Clinical Anatomy (CCCA), Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Medicine and Physiology and Pharmacology are based on the main University precinct, while Veterinary Sciences is based at Langford, 14 miles South-West of Bristol.
The Faculty is proud of its excellent teaching, and research that is at the forefront of its disciplines, carried out in a collaborative and collegial atmosphere. Its teaching has been highly rated in QAA subject review, and in 2005 it was awarded a prestigious HEFCE Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), which provided £5m for the development of new and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, and state-of-the-art teaching facilities.
The Faculty also provides the focus for many of the University’s major research themes.
Much of this work is carried out using state-of-the-art facilities, such as the Wolfson Bioimaging Facility and the recently-opened Centre for Nanoscience and Quantum Information, and involves fruitful collaborations with colleagues in other Faculties in Bristol, as well as nationally and internationally. The quality of research in the Faculty was recognised in the recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE2008) in which more than 90% of the Faculty’s output was judged to be of international quality.
