Making the most of a postgraduate education

The advanced knowledge and capability of postgraduates is highly prized by industry and the public sector, and at Bristol, we achieve standards of academic excellence that give our postgraduate students the best platform from which to begin their careers.

A survey of 31 UK/EU postgraduate research students who graduated from the Faculty of Medical and Veterinary Sciences in 2011 found that 28 have secured full-time paid work or further study positions, the majority of whom are engaged in postdoctoral or commercial research at top UK universities including Bristol, Oxford and Cambridge, and companies such as Eli Lilly and Cobra Biologics.

A parallel survey of taught (Master’s) students graduating in 2011 found that 23 of 24 responding graduates are in full-time paid work, part-time paid work, or work and study, with the large majority finding employment directly related to their degree at Bristol, including NHS biomedical scientists, and clinical and research scientists for commercial organisations. Full survey information is available on the Careers Service website.

Alongside our academic programmes, we offer an extensive skills training programme (PDF, 342kb) to all our postgraduate students. This can help support you throughout your study, as well as improve your employability by providing you with skills employers look for, from understanding experimental research techniques to presenting your work in a public setting.
